A SOUTH African-based man from Chipinge – Sam Mambande – was gunned down in the early hours of the New Year’s Day following a dispute over the right of way with his assailant.
Mambande had spent the night celebrating with family and friends at a popular watreing hole in Gaza high-density suburb.
Witnesses told The Manica Post that the shooting incident happened when revellers were leaving the pub.
Mambande allegedly approached his killer’s car to inquire why he was parked in the middle of the road, blocking traffic from the same leisure spot.
It is alleged that the suspect went out of his car, pulled out a gun, cocked it and shot the deceased at close range.
The suspect then fled the scene at high speed.
“We were coming out of this bar when we saw a car parked in the middle of the road, blocking traffic. He (Mambande) then hooted and got no response. He then went out of the car to ask the guy in the parked car why he was blocking traffic. This is when he was shot at close range. The suspect immediately fled from the scene at high speed. We managed to take the number plates of the vehicle though,” said one of the deceased’s relatives.
The Officer Commanding Chipinge, Chief Superintendent Trustworthy Makunike, said the suspect has not been arrested and investigations were in progress.
He appealed to members of the public with information leading to the arrest of the suspect to approach the nearest police station.
“We are still conducting investigations into the matter and those with information that might assist police to locate the suspect should approach the nearest police station. Members of the public are being urged to be on alert and exercise restraint,” he said.
