A 31-YEAR-OLD Harare man was on Tuesday hauled before the Chipinge Magistrates’ Courts on allegations of stealing two cellphones from a local mobile phone dealer.

Chizengeya Ncube pleaded not guilty to theft charges when he appeared before Mr Poterai Gwezhira. Public prosecutor Mr Regis Mawarire said he stole the phones on November 29 last year. He said Ncube went to Sirdah Flea Market where he unlawfully entered into Fungai Gwenzi’s shop.

“The accused person stole a Huawei phone and a Samsung Tab 3 phone. The same day at around 1pm, he went to a Gtel Shop in Chipinge and approached Simbarashe Mukwakwasha intending to sell the stolen property to him.

“However, Mukwakwasha tipped the complainant that he saw the accused person selling his two phones,” said Mr Mawarire.

The matter was reported to the police. Detectives made a follow-up and found Ncube in possession of the stolen phones.

The two phones are valued at $600.

In his defence, Ncube said that he did not steal the gadgets, but was given the phones by the complainant on hire purchase terms.

“Gwenzi gave me the Huawei P9 and I was to pay for it in instalments. I failed to honour the agreement and he reported me to the police. While in custody I managed to pay him $300 and deposited a further $200,” he said.

The trial continues today (Friday).
