Professionals and business people in Makoni have joined hands to form the Makoni Development Association (MDA) so as to spur the district’s economic growth.

Businessman and former president of the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC), Mr Oswell Binha, was elected the association’s interim chairman.

MDA seeks to market the district as an investment destination where factories, mines and other major businesses can set up.

Members are convinced that the Diaspora community can be lured to be part of the development agenda.

Mr Binha has since been tasked with setting up structures for the organisation.

In an interview with The Manica Post, Mr Binha said Makoni District has the potential to transform many people’s lives.

He added that with the on-going devolution programme, the district will become a hub of agro-processing for tobacco, maize, wheat and soya beans, among other products.

“The association was established to initiate and promote projects that will bring about economic, social and structural development of the area. We strongly believe that the district is capable of self-sustenance.

“Due to devolution, Makoni shall become the epicentre of agricultural activities.

“Several crops can be grown here so we will push for manufacturing and processing in the district,” said Mr Binha.

He also said Rusape town is strategically located and has the potential to become an industrial hub.

“The town must locate itself at the centre of good corporate governance, which is a key ingredient in attracting domestic investments. The town’s proximity to Mutare and Beira are some of its strategic advantages. The Beira Corridor offers a national growth model for the near future,” said Mr Binha.
