EFFORTS to ensure that learning from home improves and becomes conducive for pupils in Mutare South received a major boost when a local development partner Mwana Trust yesterday distributed solar system kits at Mt Dangare Primary School in Gombakomba.

Schools remain closed during the national lockdown put in place as an intervention measure to fight the Covid-19 pandemic and will only open when it is safe to do so. Pupils are learning from home through online and radio lessons.

Mwana Trust programmes officer Mr Desmond Mutowo said through the organisation’s “Let There Be Light” project, they want to ensure that learning from home becomes more accessible and sustainable for pupils especially during these difficult times of the pandemic as well as on normal school days and holidays.

The programme will be rolled out in Mutare South and is targeting pupils enrolled at Chitakatira, Gombakomba, Mt Dangare, Rowa and Munyarari Primary Schools.

Mwana Trust has between last month and this month distributed DGLITE 3 rechargeable solar system kits to 353 vulnerable beneficiaries that include child-headed families and those living under the care of elderly or disabled people.

The kits comprise three lights, a solar panel and a USB/SD card port for charging basic electronic devices.

Mt Dangare Primary headmaster Mr Jonakisi Mauswa expressed gratitude for the gesture, describing it as a huge shot in the arm.

‘We, as a school, are very grateful for the support we continue receiving from Mwana Trust. They are paying schools fees for 70 children, supplying learning material like stationery and providing school uniforms and shoes. Child-headed families are also receiving food hampers from them every month. We thank Mwana Trust for their work in our communities,” said Mr Mauswa.

The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education District Schools Inspector for Mutare South Mr Coslatt Mpofu hailed Mwana Trust for their efforts in improving access to education and the standards of learning for pupils in rural communities.
