FOR strangling a sugarcane thief who had insulted his mother, a Zimunya man will spend the next 15 years in jail.
Zekias Moyana was arrested six months after committing the offense upon his return from South Africa.
He was convicted by High Court judge, Justice Isaac Muzenda.
Ms Jane-Rose Matsikidze represented the State.
Moyana and the late Anesu Mutanga (16) were neighbours in Piki Village, under Chief Zimunya.
The court heard that on December 22, 2018, Mutanga went to Mary Komichi (Moyana’s mother)’s garden and stole some sugarcane.
Komichi spotted the teenager and confronted him.
The two exchanged words, before Mutanga hit Komichi with a stone on her right hand.
He then fled from the scene.
Komichi went on to inform her children, including Moyana, about the incident.
“That same day at around 8pm, an angry Moyana followed Mutanga to Piki Business Centre and confronted him.
“Moyana assaulted Mutanga several times on the head with an unknown object before strangling him to death. Another villager, Rodrick Mutanga, saw Moyana committing the offence. He alerted their neighbour, Courage Mwedzi. The pair confronted Moyana and he admitted that he had committed the offense,” said Ms Matsikidze.
A police report was made.
However, before he could be arrested, Moyana fled to South Africa.
Moyana then decided to return home in July 2019 and was arrested upon his arrival.
