KAIZER Chiefs coach, Steve Komphela, is rueing the suspension to midfielder and Warriors’ captain, Willard Katsande, for their next match against Bloemfontein Celtic.

Katsande, who donned the captain’s armband during last weekend’s loss to Chippa United in the absence of Itumeleng Khune, picked up a fourth yellow card which will rule him out of their next clash next week Wednesday.

Over and above the Mutare-born and Zimbabwean workhorse, Chiefs’ growing suspension and injury list includes the likes of Itumeleng Khune, who sat on the bench in Port Elizabeth despite carrying a back injury, Erick Mathoho, Tsepo Masilela, Sibusiso Khumalo and William Twala.

However, Komphela is optimistic that whoever steps in as replacements will take the opportunity and rise to the occasion in representing the team.

“It is an opportunity for someone to take up the position,” responded Komphela. “If you look at the team, we are sitting on about 11 (players) injured – and those are serious injuries, which should not come across as an excuse again.

“At left-back Sibusiso Khumalo is suspended, Tsepo Masilela is injured, Itu Khune, we were just praying during the game that nothing should happen to Brilliant Khuzwayo because surely we wouldn’t be in a position to play Khune.

“He was just there so that my colleague, Dan Malesela should not think we have got one keeper on the field, and they could be more aggressive towards Brilliant.

“Then you have got goalkeeper, Luthanda Sixhaso out with a knee injury, William Twala… It’s just 11.

“And now we are missing Katsande as well, it is a big challenge, but I am saying it is an opportunity for someone else to take the opportunity that Katsande has left.

“It’s not easy, but you cannot complain; no excuses. Keep on doing your job.’’ — Kick-off/Sports Reporter
