ELDERLY inmates at Zororai Old People’s Home in Sakubva could not hide their joy when they received early Christmas gifts from Mutare’s business community last week on Thursday.
Hillbright Science College partnered with OK Mart and other stakeholders and donated goodies to the elderly at the home.
The 13 inmates received groceries, clothes, blankets, buckets, personal protective equipment (PPEs), knapsacks for fumigation and other goodies from the students who paid them a surprise courtesy call.
Handing over the items, Hillbright Science College school principal, Mr Polycup Mudewairi said they would continue helping the elderly at the home, and urged other corporates and well-wishers to come on board as most elderly people are staying in underfunded institutions.
He said as an institution, they recognised the day as an annual day for the less privileged which they celebrate by showering them with gifts.
“The event teaches students to always remember the less-privileged because the problem in the world is not that we have less resources, but that there is an unequal distribution of resources.
“If one has the privilege of having more than others, they need to share. We should interact, extend a helping hand and be willing to share with those who do not have,” he said.
Expressing gratitude on behalf of the home’s administrator, Mr Gondai Gondo, Mr Titus Mbwando said it was important for schools and businesses to support the vulnerable, especially the elderly who have no one to take care of them.
“While our institution is underfunded, there is need for the community at large to take part and assist.
“We are happy to receive everything that you have brought here today. Our grandparents here feel so honoured to receive the clothes and goodies as they were real in need of them,” he said.
He further appealed to the students to continue extending their helping hand to the needy.
