WHILE most avenging spirits torment families of those who would have murdered them, a Chimanimani man’s spirit is doing the unthinkable and tormenting the family of his long lost love, whom he is accusing of betrayal.

Peter Mabuto was murdered over Gogo Sarah Makaza nee Rwodzi by a rival suitor who later dumped her.

She later married into the Makaza family.

Thirty years later, Mabuto’s spirit is now tormenting Gogo Makaza’s children and grandchildren.

When the spirit manifests on Gogo Makaza’s grandchild, Sarah, he demands appeasement from the Makaza family.

Mabuto claims that had he not been murdered by Gogo Makaza’s other lover back then, he would have married her; hence the Makazas should appease his spirit as Sarah deceived him.

However, the identity of the man who killed Mabuto has not been revealed.

Gogo Makaza and her namesake granddaughter are bearing the full wrath of the avenging spirit as they are always bedridden.

Young Sarah has since developed a mental illness.

Her father, Kasikirayi Makaza, said the avenging spirit is not only attacking his mother and daughter, but is also causing some misfortunes in the family.

“Sometimes my daughter gets very sick and when we take her to the hospital, they fail to diagnose any ailment. As soon as we get back home, she goes under the weather again.

“We have consulted a number of traditional healers and the issue of Mabuto’s avenging spirit features prominently. Mabuto’s spirit has been manifesting through my daughter and has explained why all this is happening.

“Mabuto says my mother betrayed him by falling in love with him when she had another boyfriend. He wants her back and says if he had he not been murdered, they would have married.

“However, we cannot confront my mother as she has been bedridden for quite some time now,” Makaza said.

He said his mother once revealed that at one time she was in love with two men, before Mabuto suddenly vanished, while the other suitor dumped her.

“Mabuto was killed by our mother’s lover, not my father,” Makaza said.

Chief Mutambara summoned the Rwodzis to his court and instructed them to engage the Makazas over how to appease Mabuto’s avenging spirit.

However, the Rwodzis are refusing to play ball.

“They cannot accuse our sister of promiscuity. She cannot defend herself as she is bedridden. We are prepared to assist young Sarah, we know someone who can heal her without appeasing any spirit,” said David Rwodzi.

The Rwodzi brothers who attended the court session also asked for time to consult their family elders on the best way forward.

Chief Mutambara adjourned the matter to a later date.
