A NYANGA man was sentenced to six months in prison for physically abusing his wife for returning home late from her parents’ place.

Joseph Makovere (37), of Nyanga, was convicted of contravening Section 3 (a) (1) as read with Section 4(1) of the Domestic Violence Act, Chapter 5:16 by Mutare provincial magistrate, Mr Tendai Mahwe last week, and was sentenced to six months behind bars.

Mr Mahwe wholly suspended the sentence on condition that he performs 140 hours of community service at Nyanga Police Station.

In delivering the sentence, Mr Mahwe emphasised the need to pass a deterrent sentence that would scare future offenders from perpetrating violence against innocent victims.

“The gravity of this case cannot be overstated. It serves as a critical reminder that our society does not tolerate such acts of violence. The sentence handed down today reflects our commitment to upholding the law and ensuring justice for victims.

“It is imperative that this sentence resonates as a clear message to anyone who might contemplate similar actions that they will face serious consequences. As a result, we will use this case to send a strong warning to any would-be offenders who are inflicting violence upon their innocent and unsuspecting spouses,” he said.

Prosecuting, Mr Nyasha Sesenyani said on March 8, Makovere’s wife, Nelia Maitata left home for her parents’ homestead in the Government Area of Nyanga with her husband’s consent.

They had agreed that she would return the following day.

“However, Maitata came back home two days later. When she came back, she apologised and explained why she had not returned on the agreed day. Makovere became angry and shouted at her, before slapping her several times on her face. He also kicked her all over the body, and punched her face,” he said.

Maitata was rescued by neighbours after she cried for help.

She reported the matter to the police where she was referred to the hospital for medical examination.
