DRUG abuse is a serious problem that affects many students in institutions of higher learning, and can have negative consequences on their academic, physical, mental, and social well-being.

There are different types of interventions that can be used by universities to help prevent or reduce drug abuse among their students.

Educational interventions

These are programmes that aim to increase students’ knowledge and awareness of the risks and harms of drug use, as well as the benefits of healthy behaviours.

They may also provide information on how to access help and support if needed.

Some examples of educational interventions are lectures, workshops, online courses, and peer-led sessions.

Behavioural interventions

These are programmes that aim to change students’ attitudes, beliefs and skills related to drug use, and to promote positive alternatives to drug use.

They may also help students cope with stress, anxiety, and other challenges that may trigger drug use.

Some examples of behavioural interventions are motivational interviewing, cognitive-behavioural therapy, mindfulness, and contingency management.

Environmental interventions

These are programmes that aim to modify the physical and social environment of the university to make it less conducive to drug use and more supportive of healthy behaviours.

They may also involve enforcing policies and regulations that discourage or prohibit drug use on the campus.

Some examples of environmental interventions are substance-free housing, alcohol-free events, campus-wide campaigns, and peer mentoring.

Mental health clinics and rehabilitation centres are facilities that can be put in place at universities to provide specialised care and support for students who struggle with substance use disorders and other mental health issues.

They may offer services such as detoxification, medication, psychotherapy, counselling, education and after care.

These centres can be a valuable strategy to fight drug abuse at universities, as they can help students overcome their addiction, improve their well-being, and enhance their academic performance.

There are many drug-free alternatives that can be put in place at universities to help students cope with stress, boredom, peer pressure, and other factors that may lead to substance use.

The main idea is to provide students with positive and healthy ways to cope with the challenges and demands of university life, and to prevent or reduce the harm of substance use.

Physical activity can improve mood, energy, confidence, and overall well-being, as well as prevent or reduce the risk of many chronic diseases.

Universities can offer a range of sports and fitness facilities and programmes on campus, and encourage students to join clubs and teams.

Universities can provide spaces and materials for students to pursue their artistic interests, and organise exhibitions and events to showcase their work.

Creative activities, such as painting, drawing, beads, pottery, photography, writing, etc, can stimulate the brain, enhance self-expression, and foster a sense of achievement and satisfaction.

Volunteering can be a rewarding and meaningful way to contribute to the community, help others, and make a difference.

It can also provide opportunities to learn new skills, meet new people, and expand one’s horizons.

Universities can facilitate and support students’ involvement in various local and global causes and organisations.

These interventions can be used by universities in Zimbabwe as strategies in the fight against drug and substance abuse and provide drug free campuses.

They can also be tailored to the specific needs and preferences of different university set-ups.

However, it is important to evaluate the outcomes and impacts of these interventions using rigorous methods and to share the best practices and lessons learned amongst universities.
