FORMER Chipinge South legislator Wilson Tarugarira Khumbula, who recently announced that he and his party Zanu Ndonga had joined Zanu-PF, said his decision to join the ruling party was not driven by any hidden agenda and felt he did not betray anyone by making the decision.

On the day Khumbula joined the party, he said as an ex-detainee he was tortured and later incarcerated at Hwahwa Prison by colonists together with fellow comrades.

“It is common history of the liberation struggle and party ideologies that unites the two parties than divide us.

“Now that we are becoming a single party, I urge all former Zanu members to join Zanu-PF and take part in all activities, including getting into the party structures,” he said.

In an interview last week, the soft-spoken veteran politician and businessman said he was proud to have reunited with Zanu-PF and does not believe that he sold out.

“It is not joining but reuniting. This is reunification. I did not betray anyone and if anyone feels that I did something wrong and went against any ideology, that person is free to revive Ndonga.

“As far as I know, Ndonga is dead,” said Khumbula.

“I am proud of the decision I made. Some people, back then, used our party names and torn us (and Zanu-PF) into divisions. They were so determined to create enmity between us and Zanu-PF yet we had the same ideologies,” added Khumbula.

Khumbula took over the reins as Zanu leader from the late veteran nationalist Ndabaningi Sithole.

Asked if there were any prospects of him contesting on a Zanu-PF ticket in 2018 general elections, Khumbula said: “I can’t talk about that now. I am satisfied with what I am as a party member.”
