HOLY Family Secondary School in Buhera District of Manicaland is doing wonders in the implementation of Education 5.0 with their flourishing bee-keeping, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, as well as broiler and road runner projects.

This came to light during the school’s Production Units Marketing Day held on Monday.

The institution showcased five booming agro-based income generating projects.

Guest of honour at the event, Buhera District Schools Inspector (DSI), Mr Tirivanhu Mutomba emphasised the importance of education that empowers learners to create their own employment.

“A good, quality education is one that provides all learners with the capabilities they require to become economically productive and develop sustainable livelihoods.

“All the five projects being done here fit in very well into this definition. A resourceful school head should think outside the box.

“If you remain in your cocoon, despite having top of the range plans, big dreams and aspirations, you will never progress beyond the corners of your mind. Let us all remember that stars shine brighter in the dark,” he said.

With only 200 learners attending school at the institution, the Buhera DSI commended the school for outplaying other institutions with bigger enrolment.

“Surely, with such an enrolment, we are astounded by the level of progress being made here at Holy Family Secondary. I am enthralled by the level of networking and stakeholder involvement at Holy Family Secondary. The authorities here have realised that individually, we are a drop and together we are an ocean,” he said.

Mr Mutomba thanked partners who helped the school achieve the feat.

“I note with happiness that Dorowa Minerals Limited supplies water to the institution. Care, Arex, Camfed, Beam and A.F.C Bank have each contributed in a unique way. Today, we are gathered here and stand proud to share Holy Family Secondary School’s success story,” he said.

In his speech during the occasion, Holy Family Secondary School head, Mr Langton Chikaka said: “In line with Education 5.0 and competence driven curriculum trajectory, Holy Family Secondary School has revised its curriculum to include STEM subjects.

“Sciences like Chemistry, Agriculture and Biology are now part of the curriculum. The venturing of the school into poultry, sweet potatoes and tomato growing as well as beekeeping are all linked to STEM subjects and the effects of the competence driven curriculum.

“Problem solving, enterprise and critical thinking skills are already manifesting. By growing sweet potatoes, learners have a home grown alternatives to bread.”

During the event, well dressed learners took turns to explain their duties in the agro-based projects such as tomatoes production where a bumper harvest is expected from mid-August.
