ZIMBABWE teenage athletics sensation, Vimbai Maisvorewa made a huge leap in enhancing her career after she was recently awarded a scholarship by Hillcrest College.

Maisvorewa is enjoying a new lease of life since joining Hillcrest College from Dope High School in Rusape.

She told Post Sport that the opportunity came earlier than she expected.
Having grown up in a modest family, she said she did not have a platform to showcase her talent.

She said her dream is to compete at the highest level.
Maisvorewa’s ultimate goal is to be a professional athlete who will compete at international level.

“Now that I am exposed to international competition, my goal is to become a professional athlete. I want to reach as high as I can in the world of athletics for my country as well as an individual. I know I have a lot to learn and I am willing to do so.

“I am so excited to be at Hillcrest where there are fields which are up to standard which will help me develop. I think everything about my career will be catered for here. It is really an honour for me,” said an ecstatic Vimbai.

Maisvorewa who developed love for the sport while she was in grade seven at Chinyamahumba Primary School in Rusape credited her recent success to hard work and the support from her parents and trainers.

Vimbai came first in 2015 at the COSASA games in Lesotho and qualified for the International Association of Athletics Federation World Under-18 Championships in Colombia unfortunately she could not go because of her age.

In 2016, the talented athlete came fourth in the Regional Five competition in Angola in the 800 metre category.

She came second in Harare last year and that is where she booked a place in the finals in Kenya where she managed a sixth position.

Hillcrest College sports director Crispen Mhike described her as a remarkable sportswoman.
“It is good that we have her here at Hillcrest. We are working with her trying to improve her academics that is the most important thing. As an elite athlete she really needs good academics.

“We are also working on her on the Cambridge syllabus. We will help her and we will send all her academics and times to some universities in US that we work with. That will help her advance. We believe she is a potential Olympic medalist. On the sport side, we have done a lot of tests on her and we are also looking at her diet as well,” said Mhike.
