Hilbright College empowers female students

AFRICA’S development requires higher levels of education as well as higher levels of technology, the Deputy Minister of Energy and Power Development, Engineer Munacho Mutezo, has said.Eng Mutezo made the remarks when he was guest of honour at Hilbright Science College Prize Giving Night at a local hotel last Thursday night.

The ceremony was running under the theme: “Higher and Brighter with Science Education”

“It is pleasing to note that Hilbright Science College is cognisant of the nation’s pursuance of implementing the affirmative action by enrolling more girls.

“By excelling in sciences, Hilbright Science College girls have thrashed the old myth that sciences are difficult for girls,” said Eng Mutezo.

He also commented the sterling work being done by the college through its community outreach programmes.

The college which recently unveiled a scholarship programme has six students benefiting from it and it is also assisting the less-privileged within the Mutare community.

“Students of Hilbright Science College value the community their college operates in.  Hilbright Science College Charity Club members through the Counselling and Guiding Department participated in clothing and feeding the needy, environmental awareness campaign and are currently working on a health and temperance expo,” he said.

Eng Mutezo also urged students not to wait for opportunities to be created for them, but become active players under the Zimbabwe Agenda for Sustainable Socio-Economic Transformation programme.

Hilbright Science College chief servant, Mr Pardon Mugari, thanked Government for supporting informal education.

A total of 57 students were awarded prizes and 32 of them were female students.

The best overall student for the 2014 academic year was Munashe Sakarombe, a Form Four student who walked away with 10 prizes including the Solusi University best overall student and Minister’s best Science student which was sponsored by Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs, Cde Chris Mushohwe.

The ceremony was also graced by Cde Mushohwe and the provincial education directorate.
