A SEVERE hailstorm swept the outskirts of Rusape recently and left a trail of agricultural destruction that has dampened farmers’ hopes of a bumper harvest.

The violent storm pruned ripened tobacco, tussling maize and other crops along its path.

The damage was most felt at Crofton Farm, about five kilometres outside Rusape, where farmers are agonising under its brutal effect.

Sensitive tobacco leaves were shredded and pock-marked by hail stones while the maize crop, which was at knee-high growth stage and tussling was pruned, leaving the farmers in a quandary and unsure if it will rebound or not.
