A CHECHECHE-BASED security guard was last week jailed nine years for possessing 4.5kgs of ivory worth US$1 125.

Samuel Tirivaviri of Mabhiza Village under Chief Musikavanhu’s area who was employed as a security guard at Southern Company at Checheche Growth Point appeared before Chipinge magistrate, Mr Franklin Mkwananzi for unlawfully possession of ivory.

He pleaded not guilty, but was convicted because of overwhelming evidence against him.

State prosecutor, Mr Timothy Katsande said on August 30, police detectives received information that Tirivaviri was in possession of ivory and was looking for buyers.

“The detectives went to Mabhiza Business Centre posing as potential buyers and met him.

“Tirivaviri confirmed possession of the ivory and showed the detectives. The detectives indentified themselves before arresting him. The ivory was recovered,” said Mr Katsande.
