Granny (97) finds ‘peace’ in Save River The old woman threw herself in Save River after being accused of witchcraft by fellow villagers

A 97-YEAR-OLD Chipinge woman who was being tormented by fellow villagers who were accusing her of practising witchcraft decided to end her life by throwing herself in Save River on Sunday.

As Zororai Rangisai was bathing on Sunday morning, Gogo Maria Manyange dived into the crocodile-infested river in a case of suspected suicide.

Deputy Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka said no foul play is suspected.

The incident happened in Tumbiri Village under Chief Garahwa.

“It is understood that some villagers were accusing the deceased of practising witchcraft. She dived into Save River and drowned. Zororai Rangisai (43) saw the deceased as she was diving into a pool.

“Rangisai alerted a fellow villager, Maxwell Haisa, who rushed to the scene.

“The two managed to retrieve the body and alerted the police,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.

Meanwhile, a 50-year-old Buhera woman was this week arrested after she fatally struck her aunt (89) with a wooden log following an altercation over an unknown matter.

The deceased, Gogo Mandionesa Wasenga, had gone out of the kitchen hut to relieve herself when the suspect, Lucia Jichichi, struck her with a log she had withdrawn from the fire.

Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Nobert Muzondo confirmed the incident which happened in Sengamai Village in Chief Nyashanu’s area.

“Mandionesa went outside the kitchen hut around 4am to relieve herself before Jichichi woke up and picked up a wooden log from the fireplace.

“Mandionesa returned to the kitchen hut and saw Jichichi holding the log and threatening to strike her.

“Jichichi charged towards the deceased and pushed her with both hands before hitting her with the log. She fell on the corner of the kitchen bench and died instantly.

“Dorcas Sibanda, who witnessed the incident, informed a fellow villager, Abisha sengamai, who reported the matter to police,” said Inspector Muzondo.
