A CHIMANIMANI man (37) is in remand prison for allegedly raping his aunt who is 50 years older than him.
Seemore Jenya was last week hauled before the courts facing rape charges after he allegedly raped his 87-year-old aunt on September 13.
He was not asked to plead when he appeared before Mutare provincial magistrate, Mr Langton Carter.
Jenya was remanded in custody to October 15.
Prosecuting, Mr Thurston Mubvumbi said Jenya, of Chibuwe Village in Chief Mutambara’s area, took advantage of the cover of darkness and went to his aunt’s homestead.
The elderly woman stays on her own and had retired to bed when Jenya pounced on her.
“Jenya forcibly opened his aunt’s door which was locked from inside. His aunt was sleeping on the floor and Jenya threatened to kill her if she screamed for help.
“Jenya approached his aunt and fondled her breasts. She remained silent due to fear for her life.
“Jenya raped the complainant once. After the act, he left the room,” said Mr Mubvumbi.
The matter came to light the following morning when the complainant narrated her ordeal to a church-mate from the same village.
She was advised to report the matter at Nyanyadzi Police Station.
Police attended the scene and arrested Jenya.
The complainant was taken to Birchenough Bridge District Hospital for medical examination.
It was confirmed that she had been raped.
While the sexual abuse of children is rampant in Zimbabwe, elderly women are also easy targets for rapists.
According to the Zimbabwe Gender Commission, at least 22 women are raped daily in Zimbabwe, with an average of one rape case taking place every 75 minutes.
