MUTARE Boys’ and Girls’ high schools were a hive of activity last weekend as Harare Girls’ High School turned on the magic to defend their national Under-14 basketball title.
A total of 24 schools that included 20 representatives for boys and girls from all the provinces, two defending champions as well as the two hosts took part in the national basketball finals.

The host school for boys — Mutare Boys’ High — found the going tough in the quarter-finals where they were booted out of the tournament by St Eric with a 12-5 scoreline. St Eric went on to progress to the finals after winning against Dzivaresekwa in one of the semi-finals, while St Ignatius beat Umzingwane in the other semi-finals. St Ignatius were crowned boys’ champions after edging St Eric by a half basket in the finals, while Harare Girls’ High successfully defended their title after dismissing Zengeza in the finals.

Manicaland were represented by the two hosts — Mutare Boys’ High and Mutare Girls’ High — as well as provincial boys’ champions Dangamvura and Mt Selinda High for the girls.

Dangamvura bowed out of the tournament in the quarter-finals after yielding to champions St Ignatius. In an interview, Mutare Boys’ High basketball patron-cum coach Richens Tawanda Musiyarira expressed satisfaction with the level of competition displayed by the schools.
