FOUR players from Manicaland Basketball Association were selected to join the provisional national squad to represent Zimbabwe at the 2017th edition of the FIBA World Basketball Games.

This year’s FIBA Games will be held in March at a venue and dates to be announced. The four are Moses ‘Zimo’ Muyambo, Kudakwashe ‘KP8’ Pote, Tinashe ‘Rimz’ Njovo and Trevor Sanyatwe from Mercenaries and D-Knights, respectively.

Former MBA players, Benson Nyatanga (former D-Knights) now with Harare City Honerts and Stenard Mapurisa (former Hillcrest and Mercenaries) now with Western Cape Mountaineers (SA) were also called for national duty.

Training for the provisional squad will commence today (Friday) at Prince Edward High School in Harare.

The senior men’s team’s first camp for local players will be held from today up to Sunday (February 12), while the South African-based players start from February 24 to 26. The final camp where selected players will be assessed will be held five days before the travelling day.

Manicaland Basketball Association spokesperson, Taurai Dhliwayo, confirmed that the four will be part of the provisional squad. He said: “We feel honoured as a league. There is an improvement in the number of selected players from this side. Last year, only Moses ‘Zimo’ Muyambo qualified for the FIBA competitions, but now we have four representatives. We hope they will make it into the final team.”

In a separate interview, Muyambo, said: “I learnt a lot from last year’s games and now that I have colleagues from this end, we will display what we can do best and make this province proud. All we need is support and motivation.”
