A NIGHT fire recently razed down a wooden cabin in Bordervale suburb of Mutare and left two families destitute.

The families accrued huge losses after losing all their belongings in the fire, save for the clothes they were wearing.

A neighbour, Mr Richmore Matiya (57), heard loud screams from the trapped families and rushed to rescue them.

No-one was injured in the inferno.

Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the incident, and said the wooden cabin and property that was inside were reduced to ashes.

The incident occurred on April 5.

“Mr Ritchmore Matiya (57) of Bordervale, Mutare was asleep in the main house when he heard loud screams from a nearby cabin that was being rented by two families.

“The four-roomed cabin was occupied by Ms Memory Makamadzi and Ms Wadzanai Chokureva. Mr Matiya ran to the cabin and found it ablaze. Mr Matiya raised alarm while helping the trapped victims to safety,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.

However, the fire had spread too quickly and consumed the entire structure.

The two families were left with nothing, save for the clothes they were wearing.

“Fortunately, none of the tenants were hurt in the fire. The cause of the fire is yet to be established. Police at Mutare Central and Mutare Fire Department are still investigating the cause of the fire,” he said.
