RESIDENTS in Florida suburb of Mutare were yesterday all smiles after receiving grocery hampers and meals from a support group based in the United Kingdom to cheer their spirits during the festive season.

The Florida Support Group comprises people who grew up in the suburb but relocated to the UK.

It was formed in 2019 with the objective of uplifting and making a difference in the community through sending money, food and toys.

Beneficiaries of the grocery hampers included underprivileged children aged between four and 12 as well as the elderly over 60 years old.

Over 400 people benefited from the gesture.

The grocery hampers comprised of sugar, flour, maize-meal, salt, sugar bean, cooking oil and soups.

Speaking on the sidelines of the event, chairperson of the foundation Mr Michael Chad said they are delighted to give back to the community they grew up in to bring some cheer to them during the festive season.

He added that plans are afoot for the support group to expand the gesture by providing the community with goodies, clothes and books for school children every month.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has put people through hard times as many struggled to recover from the losses they suffered after their livelihoods were affected. We, therefore, decided to share the little we get with our community back home, especially during Christmas,” said Mr Chad.

One of the beneficiaries Mrs Maria Machawo thanked the support group for the kind gesture.

Said an elated Mrs Machawo: “We are grateful for the goods we received and it is heartening to share good moments together during the festive season.”
