POLICE have warned the public to be wary of people masquerading as police officers following a recent incident in which a Nyanga man was robbed by two men who lied that they were police officers with a warrant to search his house.

Deputy Manicaland provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Muzondiwa Clean said Pearson Mabika (44) of Number 3, View House, Municipal Camp, lost valuable goods to robbers who were claiming to be law enforcing agents.

Said Asst Insp Clean: “On the fateful day, Mabika was sleeping in his house when he heard a knock on the door.

When he asked who it was, the robbers ordered him to open the door, saying they were police officers who had been sent to search his house.”

As soon as Mabika opened the door, the two robbers entered the house and produced two knives, demanding cash from him.

“When Mabika told them that he had no cash on him, the two then took an Ecco DVD player, two Nokia cell phones, a small radio and a motorbike, before they left Mabika stranded,” said Asst Insp Clean.

These robbers are still on the run and investigations are underway to bring them to book.

Asst Insp Clean said it was very important for people to ask for identification cards before opening doors to people who will be claiming to be police officers, adding that this will help them identify robbers and fraudsters.

He also urged people to mark their gadgets as well as keep serial numbers of these gadgets so that in the event of recovery of stolen goods, they will easily identify their gadgets.
