THE registration exercise for war collaborators, non-combatant and ex-combatants which will pave way for them to benefit from various empowerment projects has started in earnest and is progressing well in Manicaland.

Several empowerment projects are lined up for the veterans of the liberation struggle.

The exercise was officially launched last week on Saturday by President Mnangagwa in appreciation of the work done in fighting for black empowerment and independence of the majority.

The registration exercise commenced last week in every district across the province and will end on July 17.

Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association’s Manicaland chairman, Cde Gift Kagweda thanked President Mnangagwa for the Constitutional Amendment that paved way for the recognition of all those who participated in the liberation struggle.

“As war veterans, war collaborators, ex-detainees, children of departed war veterans and non-combatants, we want to thank President Mnangagwa for the Constitutional Amendment that paved way for the recognition of all those who participated in the liberation struggle.

“Registration is going ahead in all designated areas and we are happy that people are turning out in their numbers. We are now appealing to the Government to seriously look into the issue of the welfare of the children of war veterans who passed on before vetting. We know them, we live with them in our communities and we are witnessing their suffering. Some of them are not employed,” said Cde Kagweda during a presser at their provincial offices early this week.

Zanu PF Women’s League deputy national political commissar, Cde Alice Mutindori, who was representing ex-detainees, said: “This has been on the table for almost four decades and the new political dispensation has delivered within less than five years in office. We applaud President Mnangagwa as well as Defence and War Veterans Minister, Cde Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, for ensuring that all those who participated in the liberation struggle are finally recognised.”

Cde Angeline Mponda, the Zimbabwe Liberation War Collaborators Association (ZILIWACO) chairperson for Manicaland, said: “This is something that we have been waiting for since independence and we are happy that it has come to pass in our time. It is better late than never.”

The process started with the induction of the war collaborators and non-combatant cadres leadership, followed by a registration and vetting exercise to establish actual beneficiaries.
