EFFORTS are underway to establish an empowerment centre in Ward 12 of Nyamaropa, Nyanga District to ensure that farmers get the most out of their enterprising agricultural ventures.

The ward’s councillor, Councillor Annah Manimanzi, said their objective is to give farmers more leverage in creating value for their farming enterprises as the empowerment centre will be the axis of their selling and marketing activities.

She said the local communities have joined hands with Nyanga Rural District Council to achieve this end.

“Famers in this area have been facing challenges in selling their produce at the right prices as well as taking them elsewhere. We joined hands with the local authority, and are looking forward to establishing an empowerment centre that will benefit local communities. We hope to have this up and running during this month,” said Cllr Manimamanzi.

The move is set to protect farmers from dealing with unscrupulous merchants, she added.

Said Cllr Manimanzi: “With our own empowerment centre here, it will allow us to bargain for better deals with buyers who want to fetch the produce here without any under-pricing. It also cushions us from the costs of transporting the produce like maize, beans and potatoes to other markets.”

Nyamaropa is the farming hub of Nyanga District and can produce enough for the local communities’ subsistence as well as surplus for sale to other districts in the province and even beyond.
