THE Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education recently barred an apostolic sect that wanted to conduct a cleansing ceremony at Biriiri High School in Chamanimani following incidences of students being affected by a mysterious disease that left them with swollen legs. Biriiri High School is run by the United Baptist Church (UBC). Manicaland Provincial Education Director, Mr Edward Shumba, confirmed that they barred an apostolic sect that wanted to conduct a cleansing ceremony at Biriiri High School.

“There is an apostolic sect that wanted to conduct a cleansing ceremony at the school and we told them that they cannot do that simply because the school falls under the jurisdiction of United Baptist Church. It would not be proper for us to allow any other church to come in and perform rituals that may not be acceptable to the responsible authority,” said Mr Shumba.

A total of 20 students were reportedly sent home after being affected by a mysterious disease causing their legs to swell while in anguish. Mr Shumba said the mysterious disease was now a thing of the past.

“Our officials who went on the ground established that cases of students being affected mysterious disease causing their legs to swell while in anguish are no longer happening. In fact, according to the District Schools Inspector for Chimanimani, these cases were detected in August and September. It is no longer happening and everything is back to normal. That is also the other reason we felt we cannot allow the apostolic sect church to come in at this time,’ said Mr Shumba.
