EDITORIAL COMMENT: Easter: Pray, share, stay safe As Easter is a Christian-themed occasion, it is important to share love, faith and hope

The ManicaPost

TODAY marks the beginning of a long holiday weekend that kicks off with Easter Friday and will run through to Easter Monday on April 1.

The lengthy vacation offers people respite from their daily grind to commemorate the Easter holidays, which is an important occasion to Christians as they celebrate Jesus Christ’s crucifixion, resurrection and triumph over death.

Christian gatherings and activities characterise the event, while some use the time to travel and spend moments with family, relatives and friends.

As Easter is a Christian-themed occasion, it is important to share love, faith and hope.

God showed us the utmost love by sacrificing His Only Son so humanity could receive salvation.

Jesus showed humility by carrying the Cross of our transgressions and was crucified so we could be saved.

We need to follow this example by spreading these virtues to our compatriots.

As we celebrate, we must remember the needy in our midst and show them kindness by sharing what we have.

We are much stronger and better when we are together and pulling in the same direction.

That way, we can find solutions to even seemingly insurmountable problems.

This is the message President Mnangagwa has been driving home, epitomised by his mantra: “Nyika inonamatirwa nevene vayo”.

As we continue developing the country brick by brick and stone upon stone, the power of prayer as a country can fuel our drive towards Vision 2030 through the attainment of an empowered and prosperous upper-middle income society.

Praying for Zimbabwe’s prosperity, coupled with steadfast hard work, can see us overcome the challenges besetting our country because where there is a will, there is a way.

Throughout the Easter holidays, we must prioritise each other’s safety and security on the road and at home.

Motorists and pedestrians must exercise caution on the roads at all times.

Let us not throw caution to the wind and get carried away over the duration of the celebrations.

It is always important to drive to arrive alive and it is better to be late than be the late.

Everyone has a role to play in preventing incidents that turn our highways into deathtraps through road carnage.

Obeying all the regulations that govern the safe usage of roads is crucial in guarding against the usual spike in traffic accidents associated with this period.

Speeding and drunk driving must be avoided at all times as these are the major causes of road traffic accidents.

With lots of activities lined up among families and churches, human and vehicle traffic is likely to surge.

Mutare is a border city and we trust that the authorities at Forbes Border Post are prepared to efficiently handle the expected increase in traffic.

During the Easter celebrations, it is imperative that parents and guardians keep a strict eye on children and ensure that young people do not dabble in dangerous drugs and substance abuse.

It is important to remind each other that there is no need to overindulge, but enjoy responsibly.

The threat of cholera is still lingering and with gatherings in mind, be it at home or church, we must always uphold high hygienic standards to prevent outbreaks and spread of the disease.

We can all make this an Easter holidays with a difference by sharing love, peace and joy.
