MINISTER of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, Cde July Moyo has urged people residing in Nyanga and other low lying areas such as Mbire, Guruve and Mutoko to be on high alert following the threats of Cyclone Kenneth which is expected to landfall along the Tanzanian border and Mozambique.

In an interview yesterday Cde Moyo said the cyclone might not reach Zimbabwe with its high momentum, but because of a likelihood of heavy rains in mentioned areas, people should take precautionary measures.

“Across Zimbabwe in areas like Nyanga, Mbire, Guruve and Mutoko we think those areas may be in the path of the cyclone, not necessarily in its strength but because it will deposit a lot of rain we just want to take a precaution that people must be alert.”

Cde Moyo added that the Civil Protection Unity in partnership with the Meteorological Department will continue monitoring the cyclone and has urged people to stay posted on information transmitting devices such as television, radio and cell phones.

“It may come in the evening so people should keep their radios and cell phones switched on so that they will be posted on latest developments as we will be advising people in case its trajectory ends up coming to Zimbabwe,” he said.

The Civil Protection Unit (CPU) issued a warning of a tropical cyclone Kenneth saying it is had been sighted in the Comoros Island facing Zimbabwe’s direction.
