MUTARE City Council has urged defaulting businesses and residents to pay up so as to enable the local authority to offer improved service delivery.

Unpaid bills have seen the city council now being owed close to $1 billion, with the figure said to be ballooning every month.

Mayor, Councillor Blessing Tandi, said non-payment of bills is bleeding the local authority as it is affecting their revenue collection.

This ultimately impacts negatively on their provision of quality services to the city.

“We are calling on the Mutare community to always pay their bills in time. This enables us to offer them better services. With that commitment, together we can make our city better as responsible citizens,” said Cllr Tandi.

He added that the local authority accepts payment plans as a way of creating convenience for defaulters to clear their debts.

Cllr Tandi said in order to recover what they are owed, they make take recourse to litigation or engaging private debt collectors.
