CHIPINGE Town Council (CTC) will join five other local authorities that were invited to attend the prestigious 18-month long municipal financing project in Zambia.The international conference will kick off early next month.
CTC administrator, Mr Joseph Mashingaidze confirmed the development saying the programme was funded by the International Centre for Local Democracy.
“Our staffers together with representatives from five other local authorities will attend an 18-month conference scheduled to start early December.
“We are happy that Chipinge Town Council was chosen to be part of this important programme. All local authorities from Southern Africa were asked to submit CVs to participate in this programme but we are happy that we were among the successful ones. Over 300 local authorities from Southern African countries applied to take part in this programme and we are among the successful ones.
“The main agenda of the programme is to promote democracy in running council business. The programme encourages local authorities to factor out inequalities targeted at people with disabilities, the elderly and child headed households,” he said.
“The training will kick off with an introductory induction that starts in the first week of December. The other countries whose local authorities were invited are Zambia, South Africa, Uganda and Tanzania. Zimbabwe has six local authorities that will participate in this programme,” said Mr Mashingaidze.
Meanwhile, councillors from Chimanimani and Chipinge last week received training from the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing.
The training was aimed at orienting and equipping new and returning councillors with knowledge and skills on how to run local authorities.
The councillors were taken through their policy-making parameters.
