PARENTS in Usanga high-density suburb of Chipinge Urban have partnered with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education to construct a primary school. The move is meant to ease the walking distance most pupils in the area were enduring to reach the nearest school. Through the parents’ efforts, the community has so far finished the construction of an administration block, while work on the other blocks will resume soon.

Currently Chipinge Urban is battling to absorb thousands of pupils due to population growth. Speaking at the official opening of the administration block at Makochoredze Primary School, Chipinge District Schools Inspector, Mr Richard Gabaza, said the new school was a result of hard work between the School Development Committee, parents and the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education.

He said the progress being made at the school was also a result of commitment by all stakeholders. Mr Gabaza, however, appealed for more assistance to speed up the construction work as some pupils are learning in makeshift buildings.

“The new school will bring relief to thousands of pupils in this community as they used to walk long distances to access school. The efforts being made by parents here is commended as it will decrease the teacher to pupils ratio in the surrounding schools. We have a very bad situation here where our schools have no facilities to accommodate all the pupils in Chipinge. We hope parents will continue paying fees religiously for the benefit of our children,” said Mr Gabaza.

The school’s SDC chairperson, Mr Caiphas Mwarwadza, said the construction of more blocks would bring relief to pupils as they were currently learning in wooden blocks.

“Our school has over 500 pupils and we hope to build more classroom blocks which can accommodate more children,” he said. ends
