THE long arm of the law finally caught up with four notorious robbers who had unleashed a reign of terror by breaking into business premises at Checheche Growth Point in Chipinge and stealing goods worth thousands of dollars.
The quartet – Tawanda Mlambo (32), Alpha Malumbelo (18), Malvin Katsoma (23) and Edmore Munhanga (32) – appeared before Chipinge magistrate, Mrs Elizabeth Hanzi last week on Friday.
They were facing five charges of unlawful entry and theft charges.
The gang was not asked to plead and were remanded in custody to August 5 for trial.
Prosecuting, Mrs Chipo Matanga said the offences were committed between July 4 and July 20.
The court heard that on July 3, the four allegedly broke into Mr Happymore Moyo’s shop and stole property worth $24 300.
In the second count, the suspects broke into Mr Pedzisai Shopera’s shop and stole goods worth R30 600.
“While inside Mr Shopera’s shop, the four stole curtains, bags and groceries,” said Mrs Matanga.
In the third count, the four broke into Mr Abijah Macharangwanda’ shop and made good their escape with goods worth R18 170.
From Mr Macharangwanda’s shop, the accused stole clothes, handbags, travelling bags and blankets.
Goods worth R13 320 were recovered.
In the fourth and fifth counts, the gang broke into Mr Collen Sanyamuera and Ms Sarah Faduku’s shops.
“From Mr Sanyamuera’s shop, they stole goods worth US$87. Goods worth US$72 were recovered. They stole goods worth R29 600 from Ms Faduku’s shop goods,” said Mrs Mutanga.
She revealed that the four accused persons were arrested for a different unlawful entry case at Khumbula Shop.
The quartet later confessed that they had also broken into the other four shops at Checheche Growth Point.
