POLICE in Chipinge are investigating a case in which human remains suspected to belong to a boy who went missing in February last year were discovered along Nyamuvhidza stream on Wednesday last week.
Manicaland police spokesperson Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa confirmed the incident.
Police say these human remains found are believed to be those of a local child who was reported missing in February last year.
“The remains were discovered in a bushy area by a cattle herder on Wednesday last week, at around 2pm along Nyamuvhidza stream in Mutema Village under chief Mutema in Chipinge.”
Insp Kakohwa said the remains had since been identified as those of five-year-old Steven Mutseneki of Mutema Village in Chipinge. Steven went missing on 12 February 2017 at around 11am when he was on his way home from Chitondwe ECD School, Bondi in Chipinge.
“Simon Manyame (43) of Mutema Village under chief Mutema was herding cattle in a bushy area when he discovered the remains of a human being scattered on a rocky ground. He then informed other local people who included Steven Mutseneki, Ponesai Mutseneki and Edmore Maonechiri who subsequently went to see the remains,” said Insp Kakohwa.
Upon seeing the clothes, which were covering the ribs, Steven Mutseneki was able to identify the remains as those of his son Steven Mutseneki junior aged five.
The matter was then reported to Chipinge police. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the boy’s death are currently underway.
