MOST of the fires reported in dwelling places are started by candles. The candles are either left unattended or put near something that can burn, such as curtains, blankets or some other furniture items. Another critical factor attributed to candle fires is that some people, especially drunkards, fall asleep leaving a candle burning and as a result cause a fire. Children carelessly playing with candles are also to blame.
To avoid home candle fires, the following fire safety tips should be strictly followed;
First consider using solar lamps or battery-powered torches which do not produce an open flame,
But if you are to use a candle ensure that it is placed in a very stable holder of metal, glass or other non-combustible material,
Then place the holder where it cannot be easily knocked down,
Keep the candle at a safe distance away from anything that can burn, and
Keep candles, matches and lighters away from children.

Things not to do
Never leave a burning candle unattended,
Never put a burning candle on a Christmas tree,
Avoid using candles in bedrooms,
Candle fires usually start small. If they are discovered early they can be dealt with easily using a fire blanket or portable fire extinguisher.
