CAPS UNITED star Phenias Bamusi has faith in the quality the Green Machine arsenal boasts that he is convinced they can go all the way and clinch gold by securing a historic domestic double.

Leading in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer league proceedings, MaKepeKepe are perched at the apex of the log standings and are also in the running for knockout competition glory.

Although no team has won the dual honours of the championship and Chibuku Super Cup since the latter’s re-introduction in 2014, Bamusi, however, believes they have what it takes to accomplish the feat.

The former Cup Kings are in Chibuku action against Harare City tomorrow (Saturday) at National Sports as they launch their audacious bid for the unprecedented twin triumph and seek to progress to the quarterfinals of the tournament.

Declaring his team’s double-barreled title assault in an interview with Post Sport early this week, the speedy forward expressed optimism of their mission coming to fruition.

“It is fantastic that we are competing in both competitions and it presents us with a realistic opportunity of landing some silverware this season. As a group we are eager to return to the podium as champions again, both the Premier Soccer League and Chibuku Super Cup winners. We have a rich history of doing well in cup competitions and as such that is our target this season.

“The CAPS United culture demands that we win a trophy every season and we have to live up to that, with this campaign being no exception.

Because at the end of the season we are judged by our achievements, the need to compete for a crown becomes more imperative. If we carry the right mentality and apply ourselves like have so far done, which has seen us being table-toppers, then everything is possible,” asserted the Dangamvura-bred footballer.

Bamusi added that for the remainder of the term they shall be taking one game at a time as it comes, highlighting that they will not get ahead of themselves.

“We are craving both trophies because it has been two years since we last won the championship, while we are also targeting the Chibuku Cup because we have not won it since it returned onto the scene. The yearning to bounce back in African competition, since winning either of the two comes with a ticket to continental tournaments, is also spurring us. While we respect other teams we want to show them that we mean real business by outlasting them,” he said.

A Chibuku Super Cup medal will, however, be a second successive one for the former Mutare United player since playing a starring role for Triangle in their trophy triumph last season.

On facing ex-coach Lloyd Chitembwe, who crossed the floor to join the Sunshine Boys, for the second time inside a fortnight Bamusi said it is all part of the game and any subplots will not distract them. The trainer dumped CAPS United for Harare City and was on the receiving end last Wednesday when he succumbed to a1-0 league loss at the hands of his former paymasters.

Said the slippery winger with buoyancy: “Against Harare City it is going to be a difficult game as they will be out to revenge the defeat we inflicted on them recently. Also, the players would want to prove something to their coach but we have prepared well for that challenge and are geared for the battle.”
