WITH 11 weeks into the Mutare Basketball League, Africa University’s male team has managed to keep its top spot, while Nets lead the females section.

AU is leading the male section with 15 points, while Dangamvura Knights and Mercenaries occupy second and third positions with 13 and 12 points respectively.

Sharks and Dangamvura Knights ladies have eight and seven points respectively, while female giants, Nets lead with 10 points.

In last weekend’s results, Sophists had 66 points against Sixers’ 58. Titans got the better of Nets after winning 56- 35, while Sharks won by 53-46 points in its clash with Nets. Chikanga Hustlaz also won against Giants with 20-0 points.

AU teams have not been playing over the past two weeks as their players are on a semester break, but the male team is still the log leaders. Mutare Basketball Association spokesperson, Taurai Dhliwayo, hailed AU’s performance.

“The past 10 weeks of league matches have been exciting and full of drama. AU has been full of surprises since the beginning of the season as they would come up with more skills each week.

Their determination and hard work show that the league is no longer a one-team show like in the previous years.

“Competition is what makes the league and game exciting. There is still stiff competition among the remaining teams and I urge all basketball fans in Mutare and beyond to come in their numbers to support the sport and have fun,” said Dhliwayo.

This weekend’s matches will see Giants playing against Sixers, while D-Knights clash with Chikanga Hustlaz.

Chiefs will also be facing Sophists, while Sharks and Mutare Girls’ High School will battle it out in the females section.
