THE Minister of State for Manicaland, Dr Ellen Gwaradzimba is expected to officially open this year’s Independence Commemorations art exhibition to be held at the National Art Gallery in Mutare on April 9.

Started last year, the exhibition is in sync with Independence celebrations set for April 18. With the support from the Manicaland State Functions Organising Committee, the Art Gallery stages the event for a week to raise awareness.

NAG regional manager Ms Elizabeth Muusha said the exhibition is running under the theme “Economic Independence” and participating artists bring out pieces bordering on economic freedom.

“The drawings and paintings feed into the national vision of turning the nation into a middle income economy by 2030. Chinhoyi University of Technology students in the Creative Arts and Design Department are part of the participants supported by local artists. Part of the show include pictures relating to Mozambique, Zimbabwe’s neighbour, who played a very important role in the country’s Independence,” she said.

“Economic Independence Show is a collection of stories by young visual artists with regards the current socio-economic situation in their country. For the past 38 years since April 18, 1980, Zimbabwe like Mozambique celebrated political independence brought about by the gallant sons and daughters of these two countries.

“Powered by the new dispensation, Zimbabwe’s 39th Independence Commemorations query economic independence.

“The stories resonate not only with the national vision of turning the nation into a middle income economy by 2030 but with the mantra ‘Zimbabwe is open for business’. Economic Independence Show therefore is a platform created for visual artists to share their experiences, emotions and feelings with regards to lasting solutions to the economic in dependence crisis.

“This exhibition showcases young artists’ dreams/concerns about current status,” said Ms Muusha.
