FIFTEEN robbers who were armed with knobkerries and machetes last week pounced on two gold mines in Odzi and severely assaulted a security guard before looting some mining equipment.

The suspects tied two guards who were manning one of the premises and stoned him before attacking him with a machete.

Police confirmed the incidents that happened at Mudonhi and Sanhanga Gold Mine in Odzi respectively.

The 15 approached a security guard, Markbrite Chipotoka (36) who was manning Mudonhi Mine and woke him up. They tied him with a rope and one of the accused searched his pockets. They hit him with a stone on the head and left him unconscious.

“They proceeded to Sanhanga Mine which is a few metres away and approached another security guard, Emmanuel Dhezhi (32). They attacked him with a machete. He sustained a deep cut on the head and was left unconscious. The suspects stole a solar panel, battery cells, shoes, groceries and shovels. The total value of the stolen goods is yet to be established. No arrests were made,” said deputy Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka.

He appealed to members of the public with information leading to the arrest of the 15 to contact their nearest police station.
