A MEMBER of Johane Marange Apostolic Church from Chipinge was recently sentenced to 12 months in jail for stealing a fellow church member’s car.

Emmanuel Marange (26) was hauled before Chipinge Magistrates’ Court where he was sentenced to 12 months in jail, of which two were suspended on condition of good behaviour.

Mr Noel Mupeiwa presided over the matter.

Marange asked the complainant, Tapson Nyamhondoro (37) to lend him his car as he wanted to buy milk at Chinheya Business Centre in Chipinge.

Nyamhondoro gave Marange the keys of his white Toyota Probox, which he drove towards Chinheya Business Centre.

Marange took long to return the car as he had promised, while several attempts to contact him were futile, prompting the complainant to report the matter to the police.

Marange was arrested at Birchenough Bridge the next day, resulting in the recovery of the stolen vehicle.

The vehicle valued at US$5 000 was recovered with some defects.

Its registration number plates had been removed, while the sump and the exhaust pipe had been damaged.

The ignition keys were also missing.
