FOR scalding her husband with hot cooking oil after he refused to turn-off music from a DVD player last week earned a Penhalonga woman 24 months imprisonment.Nine months of the sentence were suspended on condition of good behaviour.
Linnet Makoni (29) will, however, not be the Zimbabwe Prison and Correctional Service guest after Mutare magistrate, Mr Makamera Waini, suspended the jail term on condition that she performed 525 hours of unpaid work at Penhalonga Police Station.
Makoni was convicted on her own plea of guilty for the heinous act of intentionally scalding her husband, Talent Ndini (23).
Ndini sustained injuries on the face and hand.
Circumstances leading to the incident were that the two were having marital problems and had stopped sharing the matrimonial bed.
Testifying before a packed court, Makoni justified her actions saying she committed the crime as revenge because she had suffered a lot at Ndini’s hands.
“I poured hot cooking oil on him because he physically and verbally abused me.
“He occasionally called me a prostitute,’’ Makoni told the court.
Talent said he had since found himself a loving girlfriend who could sometimes provide his family with some groceries since he could not withstand Makoni’s unbecoming behaviour.
Her failure to live with the fact that her husband had moved on led Linnet to scald Ndini with hot oil hoping no one would love him in his deformed state.
“I have finally fixed you. I tried to poison your food, but you would not eat it. You can now proceed to divorce me.
“ I don’t care because no one will be interested in dating a person with a deformed face,’’ she is alleged to have told Ndini.
