RURAL schools in Makoni that have been experiencing shortages of teaching and learning materials this week received a major boost following the availing of over 50 000 text books by a local Non-Governmental Organisation.

The text books, both for primary and secondary schools, were sourced by Family Visions Trust from the United States-based Zambezi School Books Project.

Family Visions Trust is distributing the books to schools for free.

The trust’s executive director Mr Obert Gonzo said his organisation, which distributed 80 000 books last year, is complementing Government efforts to uplift the standards of rural education to the same level with boarding and urban schools. The books which cover all subject areas are also in tandem with the revised curriculum.

“We have started distributing the 50 000 books that we sourced from our partners in United States of America. The books are meant mainly for rural schools because that is where we discovered the urgent need to chip in.

“A text book is a key learning material which a school cannot operate without. The textbooks are in line with the new curriculum and this is a shot in the arm for schools with no financial resources to purchase the books on their own. The books are from Early Childhood Development (ECD) to Advance Level and cover all learning areas.

“Last year we distributed over 80 000 text books to schools in the district through our partnership with Zambezi School Books project. It is our desire that every rural learner must possess a text book and the ratio should be one text book per child. Also libraries in rural schools must be stocked with adequate, relevant and modern books so that school children are equipped with latest knowledge. Having enough textbooks in schools also helps in making teachers work easy and flexible,” said Mr Gonzo.
