A CHIPINGE man was last week jailed 24 months after the court found him guilty of two counts of cultivating and possessing dagga.

Langton Simango (39) of Glengary Village under Chief Mutema area appeared before Chipinge magistrate, Mrs Elizabeth Hanzi.

Prosecuting, Mr Timothy Katsande said on February 1, the trio of Detective Sergeant Peter Kasora, Assistant Inspector Chivasa and Detective Sergeant Teerai Muchechesi received a tip-off that Simango had cultivated several plants of dagga at his homestead and garden.

“The three detectives reacted swiftly and approached the accused’s homestead and found 130 plants in the garden. They also escorted Simango to his homestead and found 16 plants around his homestead measuring 1,68metres,” said Mr Katsande.

On the second count, the detectives conducted a search in Simango’s bedroom and found 150g of dagga.

Simango pleaded guilty and was slapped with 24 months’ imprisonment, of which six months were suspended on condition that he does not commit a similar offence in the next five years.

He was also facing another charge of trapping wild animals in his village.

“The accused was using spring jaw traps to ensnare wild animals in Glengary Village. He led the detectives to a nearby forest where he had set up the traps,” said Mr Katsande.

Simango was fined $30 000 or six months in jail for the offence.
