MORE than 200 pool players will converge in Mutare’s Dangamvura high-density suburb this weekend for a two-day tournament that starts tomorrow (Saturday). The one-man tournament to be held at Villa Spot is newly formed, Diamond Pool League’s, first competition for 2017.

After playing only two games this season, teams in the premier league will this weekend set aside their league fixtures and send their players to partake in the promising encounter.

DPL information and publicity secretary, Munyaradzi Nedziwe, revealed this week that each time is supposed to send a minimum of six players.

“We are expecting fireworks and a great show of polished pool skills as we have some of the best players in the league.

“We have just played two league games in the 2017 season and everyone is fresh and raring to go.

“This tournament is a way of fostering friendship and unity among pool players in the new league,” he said and added:

“By bringing pool players together at one spot we are trying to sow seeds of harmony and brotherhood or sisterhood among them.

“This is a social game and we aim to create friendship among participants.”
Nedziwe said the tournament was open to everyone with a passion for the sport.

“This tournament is not restricted to our members only, but to outsiders as well. However, to compete in the tournament, DPL members will pay $2 per player, while outsiders will fork out $3.

“DPL teams that fail to bring the required minimum of six players to the tournament will pay a $5 fine for every member shortfall.

“Games start at 12pm on both days and we want to speedily conduct draws and be in a position to finish on time,” he said.

Ladies will compete in a special arrangement that will also see winners walking with handsome cash prizes

DPL players to watch during the competition include Zhakshiraq’s Brighton Nyauchi, Nedziwe, Chiwara and Francis Frank.
Charles Magurei of Nyamauru and Chrispen Zikiti of Hanzu1 are also eying the big prize.

Blackstars have the likes of Willard Ngorima, Mapira, Talkmore Baradza, Blessing Samabvu and Andrew Mutuna who are likely to cause major upsets.

Newly formed Rozvi Empire will bank on the experience of Rotchie Muyambo, while Dangamvura Hotel banks on club captain, Josiah Mutimbu to win the competition.
