A recent fun-filled soccer tournament in Chipinge ended tragically after a 26-year-old man was stabbed to death by another man who had attempted to fondle his girlfriend’s buttocks.

Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Norbert Muzondo confirmed the incident which happened in Middle Sabi under Chief Mutema’s area.

The suspect, Ephraim Mukwenga, who was part of the people who were coming from a soccer tourney at Tongogara Refugee Camp, provoked the now late Claudius Mapeto, asking him if he could fondle his girlfriend’s buttocks.

This did not go down well with Mapeto and he challenged Mukwenga for a fight.

Mukwenga allegedly produced an unknown sharp object and stabbed Mapeto on the left side of the chest.

Mapeto succumbed to the injuries before being admitted at Tongogara Refugee Camp Hospital.

“Mapeto and Mukwenga were part of the people who were coming from a soccer tournament at Tongogara Refugee Camp. On their way home, Mukwenga saw Mapeto walking in front of him alongside his girlfriend, Antonetta Maronga.

“Mukwenga asked Mapeto in a provocative manner if Maronga was his girlfriend. He went on to ask Mapeto if he could fondle her backside. The infuriated Mapeto challenged Mukwenga for a fight.

“Mukwenga produced an unknown sharp object and charged towards Mapeto. He stabbed him on the left side of the chest. Mapeto shouted for help.

“A motorist, Caroline Maphosa, rushed Mapeto to Tongogara Refugee Camp Hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. His body was taken to Chipinge District Hospital for a post-mortem,” said Inspector Muzondo.

Mukwenga vanished soon after committing the heinous act and police are appealing to members of the public with information leading to his arrest to contact their nearest police station.
