RUSAPE physiotherapist, Mr Clemence Muhle, is a serial gambler with an insatiable appetite for quick profits.

He believes in regular patterns to beat the odds and win.

Mr Muhle is an astute disciple of the law of large numbers — a statistical principle — that says as the sample size increases, the average of the actual outcomes will more closely approximate the mathematical probability.

His behaviour is clearly motivated by the desire to win big and this is buttressed by the scale in which his entire family is deeply involved in wholesale and supermarket promotions and competitions.

After his knack of gambling parachuted him to prominence in 2018 when he won a record three vehicles in the OK Grand Challenge draw, his astounding success has left many convinced that the exploits of this Chipinge man are propelled by juju.

But Mr Muhle says he has mastered a unique way of winning competitions and promotions.

Since 2013, he has bagged prizes worth over US$500 000.

This year, the luck started building up on May 10 as Mr Muhle turned 43.

On May 26, his wife Mrs Fatima Muhle gave birth to the couple’s ninth child — Matipaishe.

On June 4, Mrs Muhle and her daughter Nallia both won the OK supermarket weekly prices of $9 300.

The following day, (last week on Saturday) Mr Muhle landed a cool $1,5 million in the OK Grand Challenge draw.

What was his reaction to that accrual of blessings?

“That cloud nine feeling. I was so happy, particularly since my parents were around visiting us. The coincidence of their visit and our win was spectacular. They had come to see our new baby, Matipaishe. She is the one who brought us all these blessings,” said Mr Muhle.

“When grace locates you, you cannot evade it, you just have to embrace it. Winning these prizes is by the grace of God. Interestingly, the category where I put the least effort is where I won. I just had 10 coupons in the Dendairy category. This is why I am saying it is just God’s grace,” said Mr Muhle.

Mr Muhle says he invested US$1 500 in the competition as he “did not have a lot of money” following his involvement in a pyramid scheme where he was forced to reimburse panicky participants.

“I only used US$1 500. I did not play like I normally do because I did not have enough money. I focused on a few selected items,” said Mr Muhle.

Mr Muhle who studied Statistics at A-Level says he applies statistical and mathematical knowledge — especially the law of large numbers and the rule of probability — to win competitions.

“When I gave it a try at Econet SMS promotion in 2013, I realised that it is possible to win. I got motivated and tried my luck during a Metro Peech sponsored competition but lost. After learning one or two things from that previous loss, I corrected my mistakes and won a 1.5 tonne truck the following year. I use the statistical rule that says the more you enter a draw, the better your chances of winning.

“However, I am stigmatised due to people’s beliefs. Some will congratulate me genuinely, while others will say I come from Chipinge and therefore I use juju. That does not affect me as I belong to Jesus,” said Mr Muhle.

“I belong to the body of Christ. I am not a flip-flopper but at the moment I am following Apostle Chiwenga’s sermons on YouTube. I am not a gambler. I do not use juju. I do not even know what juju looks like. I am happy there are two other people from Rusape who won the $1,5m prize money. It demystifies the mentality that Muhle uses juju.

“I am into gaming, particularly promotions by supermarkets and wholesalers where I buy products and enjoy them with my family, therefore there is no loss incurred even if I lose. In addition to enjoying the products, I have a chance to win prizes on offer. In gambling, either you win or lose.

“I call this gaming, and God willing, I win,” he said.

Mr Muhle said he will invest his latest prize wisely as he has a big family.

“I have to invest it wisely considering the size of my family. I need to invest wisely for the 11 of us. I am investing in buildings, with properties you can never go wrong,” he said.
Mr Muhle runs a private physiotherapy surgery and a number of grocery shops in Rusape.

His name is also strongly linked to tobacco and gold buying as well as the Prefect Money Pyramid Scheme.

To those based in Rusape, Mr Muhle’s win was ordinary as they are now accustomed to his winning ways.

For close to a decade, he has monopolised competitions and promotions in the province.

His gambling journey started in 2013 when he won eight smart phones in the Econet SMS promotion.

In 2014, he won a 1.5 tonne truck at the Metro Peech Rusape Branch.

In 2015, he bagged a double from the same wholesaler, winning the 1.5 trucks at the Rusape and Mutare branches.

In 2016, he won another 1.5 truck from Metro Peech Murehwa.

In 2017, he won both the first and second prices (US$10 000 and US$5 000, plus all the gadgets on offer) at all the five TM Pick and Pay supermarkets in Manicaland.

This prompted the supermarket’s management to withhold the prices for three weeks to pave way for a forensic audit. The audit cleared Mr Muhle of any wrongdoing and he got his prizes.

In 2018, he won three cars in the OK Grand Challenge and an assortment of prices at Panmart Supermarket.

In 2019, he won $50 000 in the OK Grand Challenge.

No competitions were held last year due to the Covid-19 outbreak and therefore Mr Muhle took a breather.

This year he has done it again, winning $1,5m, together with Mr Caleb Kabungaidze, also from Rusape.

Mr Kabungaidze was not immediately available for comment.

Mr Muhle says he is not finished yet. He wants the grand prize.

“The grand prize went to Mutare, but I have a strong feeling that anytime soon it will come to Rusape. It will be coming home. That is one of my prayers — the grand prize. This year I had two prayer request, to win one prize and the grand prize as well. I believe the grand prize is pending. It will be answered I know — it could be in 2022 or 2023. It is there in God’s files in heaven,” he said.
