MANICALAND basketball powerhouse The Mercenaries and ladies outfit Sharks turned on the heat to win the second edition of the annual basketball tournament held last weekend at Mutare Boys High School courts.

A total of 10 male and four female teams took to the courts in a tournament that was well attended by basketball enthusiasts in the eastern border city.

The Manicaland Basketball Association (MBA) media and publicity officer Taurai Dhliwayo said the event was superb as the basketball arena was filled with supporters who had come to witness this year’s edition of annual basketball tournament.

“I want to applaud the Mutare local supporters who made the event so colourful with their participation. The event was flooded with local supporters who love the game of basketball. It is our first time to host such a huge crowd,” said Dhliwayo.

The Mercenaries, who are known for their incredible layups and the three-point shots, were on the top of their game last weekend.

Facing other nine rival teams, Mercenaries pocketed $50, followed by the Dangamvura Knights, who were the first runner ups and went away with $30 while third placed Titans went away with $20.

In the ladies category, the basketball divas Sharks scooped pole position. They went away $50 richer.

Nets weighed in on second position and received $30 followed by Africa University (AU) who were on third position and went away with $20.

Dhliwayo further congratulated all the teams who participated at the tournament together with the sponsors.

“We had 10 male and four female teams who participated at this year tournament. It was a great event in which we witnessed the Manicaland basketball giants battle it out for the coveted crown. The teams did a great job on the day.

“Our sponsors, the PWP group of churches, and MBA did a great job as well in organizing this successful event.

I salute the all those who had our backs in supporting this event especially to our local supporters,” he said.
