Haulage truck reduced to rubble

THE Makoni Rural District Council Fire Brigade’s timeous intervention on Tuesday evening saved a situation that could have been disastrous as they managed to put out a fire that started from a haulage truck at a truck inn in Rusape.
The J and J truck which was carrying 30 tonnes of fertiliser was parked at Bufallo Truck Inn along Mutare-Harare Highway caught fire from its horse. The fire brigade crew was assisted by members of the public and haulage truck drivers to put out the fire. The truck’s horse was reduced to a rubble, while some tonnes of fertiliser was also destroyed by the fire.
Rusape District police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Muzondiwa Clean, confirmed the incident and said the cost of the damaged Mozambican truck was yet to be ascertained and that no-one was injured.
“Carlos Joao (44) of Chimoio, Mozambique was driving a haulage truck belonging to J and J, Registration Number MBP 6519 coming from Beira going to Tete via Zimbabwe. He parked his truck at Buffalo Truck Inn around 7.15pm.
“He then visited the toilet and when he emerged from there he realised that the horse of his vehicle was on fire. He ran and managed to retrieve his national identification documents from the truck. The horse was reduced to a rubble. The fire also destroyed a few tonnes of fertiliser.
“Makoni Rural District Council Fire Brigade was called and managed to put out the fire with the assistance of the public. The cause of the fire is suspected to have emanated from battery terminals. As of now the value of the burnt and damaged property is yet to be ascertained,” said Asst Insp Clean.
