PROVISION of reliable electricity supply across the country is one of the many boxes that the New Dispensation can tick in its service delivery achievements in the short period that it has been in office, Zanu PF Women’s League national Secretary for Administration, Cde Monica Mutsvangwa, has said.

In her address during the Zanu PF Women’s League small enterprises exhibition at DC Mutasa yesterday (Thursday), Cde Mutsvangwa noted that Zimbabwe is now angling itself to export electricity by 2025.

“The country needs about 1 600 Megawatts and we are confident that we will be able to produce more than double that amount by 2025. Technically this means we will have enough for ourselves and surplus to export.

“The provision of reliable electricity supply was after realisation by the New Dispensation led by President Mnangagwa that energy is the backbone of all business and social development. There is really nothing we can do without smooth and uninterrupted supply of electricity. We went through a period as a nation when we did not have electricity even in our homes. The current situation is ample evidence of the development discourse of the New Dispensation,” said Cde Mutsvangwa.

Currently, Zimbabwe imports power from South Africa’s Eskom and Mozambique’s Hydroelectrica de Cahora Bassa.

The power expected to be produced locally by 2025 will not only be sufficient for the country’s needs, but will also suffice for an industrialised Zimbabwe as envisaged by the economic growth that is being planned in line with Vision 2030 that is set to transform Zimbabwe into an upper middle income economy.

The projects themselves are designed to support the country’s industrialisation drive by generating the required electricity.

Cde Mutsvangwa, who is also the Information, Media and Broadcasting Services Minister, said: “We are happy that the devolution agenda is being pursued in earnest. Funds are being distributed countrywide for that purpose. Here in Mutasa, we have projects that have been financed through the devolution agenda. In the same breadth, we are excited that the provincial councils’ policy is being pursued and members are now active on the ground.”
