ZANU PF Manicaland Youth League has partnered with Allied Timbers in rolling out bee keeping projects across the province.

The projects are set to benefit thousands of youths.

The project will see the timber processing company providing training, bee hives as well as assisting with marketing of the honey and its by-products.

Apiculture is an up-coming industry that is often overlooked in Zimbabwe despite its vast potential in honey processing, packaging and distribution.

In Makoni, the youth league has hit the ground running, with 800 youths in four constituencieshaving already been trained in bee keeping.

More than 200 youths have received their bee hives.

Zanu PF Makoni District Coordinating Committee secretary for youths affairs, Cde Stanley Sakupwanya (Jnr), said there is overwhelming response from youths who want to benefit from the project.

“The project is a drive by the party’s youth’s league to economically empower youths with viable and life changing projects. The project is apolitical and all youths from across the political divide are set to benefit.

“Some of the youths who were trained by experts from Allied Timbers are now training their peers. So far we have trained 800 youths and with the lockdown regulations now relaxed, we will resume training and take more on board.

“The uptake is so high as the youths are appreciative of the project. Allied Timbers will help us with the marketing of the honey. In Makoni we have made arrangements that the packaged honey will be sold under one brand for us to maintain standards,” said Cde Sakupwanya.

He said they chose beekeeping as it is a low cost business.

“Beekeeping is a low cost business with high returns on investment, hence it is suitable for youths who have less capital. It does not require vast tracks of land, but trees to house the hives. You can do beekeeping while doing other business activities,” said Cde Sakupwanya.
