Zanu PF party candidate in the Chimanimani Ward 16 council by-election, Cde Charles Chinamira, believes the unity in the party’s district structures will see him retaining the seat.
Ward 16 falls under Chimanimani East constituency and the by-election is pencilled in for March 14.
Chimanimani Ward 16 council seat, which covers areas such as Gwindingwi, Silverstream and Duri, among others, fell vacant after the death of a Zanu PF councillor, Cde Tendai Nyabaya, who collapsed during the party’s annual congress last year and later died at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.
Speaking to hundreds of Zanu PF supporters at Duri Business Centre in Chimanimani district at a rally to drum up support ahead of the by-election, Cde Chinamira said villagers in his area are aware of Government’s efforts in reviving the economy.
Cde Chinamira will battle it out against MDC-A’s Lazarus Murada.
“I am quite confident that I will win the by-election. This is because of the unity that exists here and the knowledge among villagers that Zanu PF, led by Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa, is making efforts to redress the challenges in our economy. Obviously that will not be achieved overnight but we will certainly conquer,” he said.
Chimanimani East legislator Cde Joshua Sacco said they are confident of victory.
“We are more concerned with the margin than anything else. We know that we are going to retain the seat. In fact, as a party we are geared to prove that people still have confidence in us despite the prevailing challenges that are being repressed anyway,” Cde Sacco said.
Since independence in 1980, Zanu PF has been occupying the Chimanimani East Ward 14 seat. In her speech at the same gathering, Chimanimani Senator Cde Monica Mutsvangwa said Zimbabwe has faced a number of challenges that have stifled efforts to revive the economy.
“I have no doubt that we will all come in our numbers and vote for our candidate. We have faced numerous problems as a country. We are in the second consecutive drought.
“Only last year, we faced Cylone Idai. These problems have left Government having to direct resources that were meant for infrastructure and economic development to rescue and recovery efforts.
“Efforts are being made to deal with our challenges as a nation. Government is aware of issues to do with food provision, no one will starve. We are importing enough grain,” she said.
Cde Mutsvangwa also said the revolutionary Zanu PF party is determined to emancipate its people.
“In Mozambuque there is Flerimo, in Tanzania there is Chama Cha Mapinduzi, in Angola there is MPLA, in Namibia we have Swapo, in South Africa there is ANC then you hear someone saying Zanu PF is dead.
“We need to sit down and see where our challenges are coming from so that we craft the right solutions,” she said.
Cde Mutsvangwa also hailed rural women for working hard to raise their children.
“As women, we have a gift that we should always cherish. We should never underestimate that gift. The onus is on us as women to teach our children the right things. Let us teach them about the responsibilities they have to this great nation. Let us teach them not to succumb to the whims of those that come in the night to give them money,” she said.
